Committee of the Regions Discusses the New EU Budget

Marshal Piotr Całbecki is in Brussels today and tomorrow (10–11 December), where he is participating, among other events, in the plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR). The session agenda includes the long-term European Union budget (Multiannual Financial Framework) and the new European cohesion policy for the 2028–2034 period.

The host of our region, one of the highest-ranking Polish regional self-government representatives in the Committee of the Regions, participated this morning in the CoR Steering Group meeting on the Multiannual Financial Framework 28–34. He has just been appointed to this group as an active member of the committee and as chair of the committee’s Natural Resources Commission (NAT). This important body will coordinate all the documents currently being prepared by the CoR concerning the new long-term EU budget and the future renewed cohesion policy.

“This is a huge responsibility and an even greater opportunity – especially now, when the financing and future of cohesion policy are being decided in Brussels. I want the voice of Kujawy and Pomorze to be clearly heard in this debate. I will do my utmost to ensure that the interests of Polish regions are taken into account in future EU finances. This is a moment when we can really influence what Europe will look like in the near future,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

As part of the group’s work, Marshal Piotr Całbecki will serve as the rapporteur for the next CoR opinion on the EU Common Agricultural Policy. The previous opinion of this body, also prepared under his supervision, was produced on the committee’s own initiative. The new opinion, required under EU rules in the context of shaping the future cohesion policy and the new long-term budget, will be significantly more important – it will be a heavyweight document, one of the key opinions currently being developed by the CoR. The NAT Commission will address this issue during a debate scheduled for February, with a draft opinion expected in April and the final vote likely to take place in July at the plenary session.

Tonight in Brussels, the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region local government is hosting a traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner, co-hosted by the CoR Chair from Hungary, Kata Tüttő. This Christmas preview promotes Polish culture and tradition, as well as our regional cuisine.
