Bydgoszcz Music Academy: A New Sound for the City
An eight-story building with four concert halls for a total audience of over 800, 644 rooms including classrooms, recording studios, a student dormitory, and a phonotheque – this is the new home of the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz, one of Poland’s leading music universities. Marshal Piotr Całbecki attended the inauguration ceremony of the campus.
“For years, Bydgoszcz has been the center of musical life in our region. It has rich artistic traditions and cultural institutions of nationwide importance. It is here that the talents of many artists, who bring worldwide recognition to our region, have flourished. Now, the city also gains a unique space that will serve not only students and faculty but the entire artistic community,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
“Here, art and architecture create a timeless harmony. The new campus will become a space of sound, encounters, and collective discovery of music, open to all of us. It is a shared journey into discovering the city’s new sound,” emphasized the Rector of the Music Academy, Prof. Dr. Hab. Elżbieta Wtorkowska.
On 3 hectares at the intersection of Gdańska and Kamienna streets, an architecturally impressive complex of buildings has been created, located near a small pond and surrounded by greenery. In addition to classrooms, it houses four concert halls: a symphony hall (423 seats), a chamber hall (140 seats), an opera hall (198 seats, with modern technical facilities), and an organ hall (71 seats), as well as a student dormitory. Complementing these is an orchestra rehearsal hall with the same acoustic parameters as the symphony hall and an outdoor stage for 250 spectators. The main building contains 644 classrooms and practice rooms. The architectural concept was developed by the Warsaw-based studio Plus 3 Architekci.
The new campus is intended to serve as a hub for the musical life of the city and the region. To mark the inauguration of the 2025/2026 artistic season, the Academy has prepared the New Start New Stars Festival. The new spaces will host both world-renowned artists and the Academy’s talented students. The first concert – featuring Academy alumnus and honorary citizen of the voivodeship Rafał Blechacz, alongside Bomsori Kim – will take place on October 15 during the formal inauguration of the academic year.
