After “Chopin, Chopin!” Comes “The Good House” – Kuyavia and Pomerania as Patron of the Tenth Muse
Wojciech Smarzowski’s latest film, “Dom dobry” (The Good House), will be presented this Saturday (October 25) during a special pre-premiere screening in Bydgoszcz. The gala, hosted by Grażyna Torbicka at the Opera Nova, will feature the director himself along with the leading cast members. The production received financial support from the Kuyavia-Pomerania Film Fund, managed by the Marshal’s Office.
The Good House is a film about love, manipulation, and domestic violence. After screenings at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia (where the director received the Polish Federation of Film Discussion Clubs Award) and the Warsaw Film Festival (Special Jury Award for the main cast), critics accused Smarzowski of certain journalistic simplifications and overly schematic, poster-like characters. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the film is powerful, thought-provoking, and skillfully made — and that it deserves to be seen.
The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Film Fund, established several years ago by the Marshal’s Office, serves as a tool for promoting the region — both as a location welcoming to filmmakers and creative industries — and, in the long term, for supporting the local economy. The creative sector, including film, generates jobs and tax revenue.
“We created the Film Fund as a way to support valuable productions while encouraging filmmakers to work in our region. We believe that together we can make cinema that moves audiences, builds identity, and stays in viewers’ memories. We are fully aware of the key role that cinematography plays today — not only as an art form but also as a force shaping the image of a place and engaging local communities,” emphasized Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The Fund has already supported productions such as Good Boy by Jan Komasa, Crossroads starring Jan Englert, Seasons directed by Michał Grzybowski, and, earlier (before the Fund’s establishment), 11 Minutes by Jerzy Skolimowski and Janusz Majewski’s Eccentrics, or On the Sunny Side of the Street. The Fund also co-financed the recent hit Chopin, Chopin! (dir. Michał Kwieciński, awarded in Gdynia for costumes and set design) and Piotr Wereśniak’s Gingerbread Heart, filmed in Toruń’s Old Town and premiering in November. Thanks to the Fund’s support, the renowned Krzysztof Zanussi is also making his latest film.
Since 2022, the Marshal’s Film Award has been presented annually. Among its laureates are Jerzy Skolimowski, Jan Holoubek, Jan Jakub Kolski, Stanisław Janicki, Krzysztof Zanussi, Leonard Pietraszak, Jan Englert, Katarzyna Figura, and Daniel Olbrychski.
