A Journey into the World of Bill Viola (Photo Report)

Thirty-two of the most important works by acclaimed American artist Bill Viola are now on display at the Centre of Contemporary Art “Signs of the Time” (CSW) and at the Tumult Foundation headquarters on Toruń’s Nowomiejski Market Square. The official opening of the exhibition “Visions of Time”, which accompanies this year’s Energa Camerimage festival, took place on Thursday, July 24, and was attended by Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

“Bill Viola, a pioneer in using video techniques in contemporary art, has been evoking deep emotions in audiences for forty-five years. The Visions of Time exhibition features incredible installations that confirm his global acclaim. I invite everyone to experience these works—visually and spiritually,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The Marshal also expressed his gratitude to the exhibition’s curators—Kira Perov, the artist’s wife, and Marek Żydowicz, President of the Tumult Foundation.

Bill Viola, who replaced traditional paint and brush with video technology, has created groundbreaking films and video installations that engage viewers on intellectual, emotional, and sensory levels. His works, exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, explore fundamental existential questions. Experiencing Viola’s art is a spiritual journey into the realm of metaphysical sensation.

The American artist’s pieces—moving images grounded in philosophical studies and analyses of old master paintings—fill the exhibition spaces at CSW and the Tumult Foundation, both specially adapted for Visions of Time.

The event, organized by CSW and the Tumult Foundation, is co-financed by the regional self-government.
Bill Viola’s work will be on view until December 31.
