Marshal Piotr Całbecki and President of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Centre for Science -Technological Centre named after Jan Czochralski, Prof. Bogusław Buszewski, and representing the Polish Academy of Sciences, President Prof. Marek Konarzewski and Vice-President Prof. Mirosława Ostrowska, signed an agreement today at the Marshal’s Office on cooperation to establish a PAN research and implementation institute in our region.

The International Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Czochralski Institute) will conduct scientific research and research and development work in the field of environmental protection, health and food safety, which, from the perspective of our region, should be considered strategic in the context of current civilisational challenges and social needs. The aim is to commercialise science and provide research and implementation support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

“This is the next stage in the development of a scientific institution in our region that is also important in the international dimension. The presence of the president and president of the Polish Academy of Sciences testifies to the importance and unique nature of what we are doing here. The new institution, like the Czochralski Centre, will serve the economic and social development of the region,” Marshal Piotr Całbecki told reporters before signing the document. He emphasised that the regional government, together with the Polish Academy of Sciences, would seek to build international partnerships for research projects and European and private funding for their implementation.

Two talents have come together – the scientific talent of Prof. Buszewski and the organisational talent of the marshal. The Czochralski Institute will be the first PAN institute in this part of Poland. We will fill in the scientific map of the country, but above all, we will fill in the competence map, because the new unit will combine the basic sciences that explain the world with the part [of science] that the Polish Academy of Sciences lacks, namely applied research and building bridges with industry,” said Prof. Marek Konarzewski at the same briefing. In his opinion, the institute should be established next year, following the final decision on this matter by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

“You have to have dreams! The environment, food quality, health – these three elements combine to bring about civilisational progress. Combining basic and applied research [i.e. applied sciences and implementation] and the opportunity to cooperate with business entities, small and medium-sized enterprises, provide an opportunity to realise ambitious plans, emphasised Prof. Bogusław Buszewski.

Under today’s agreement, the regional government declares its obligation to take care of the material side of the project (premises, funds from our regional programme for the creation of research infrastructure, access to existing laboratory and technical resources). The Czochralski Centre is responsible for, among other things, creating research infrastructure as part of a project financed by European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie (in partnership with the regional government), while the Polish Academy of Sciences is responsible for conducting the legal procedure leading to the establishment of the institute.
