Stanisław Dembiński
Professor Stanisław Dembiński, a physicist associated with Nicolaus Copernicus University specializing in quantum optics and quantum theory of magnetism, was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship on June 7, 2019. During the Solidarity movement in 1980, he was democratically elected as the rector of the university in Toruń. He is remembered by the academic community as a person of great intellect and unwavering principles, steadfast and faithful to his beliefs. Like many others of his time, he was removed from his position during martial law. After 1989, he served as a senator in the “contract” parliament, but politics never became his true calling.
“Professor Dembiński is a man of wise dialogue, grounded in truth and strong moral principles. He has shown that there are limits to compromise, for beyond those limits may lie evil and dishonor. His stance serves as a model for us, and it will continue to inspire future generations,” reads the resolution.
