Road Investments in Wąbrzeźno County
The renovation of the Wąbrzeźno bypass has been completed. This year, we are also carrying out a number of other investments in this part of the region aimed at improving road safety. The total value of these projects amounts to PLN 35 million.
“We are not only building new bypasses, but also maintaining a high standard of existing infrastructure. Our oldest bypass in Wąbrzeźno relieves residents of noise and traffic congestion while shortening daily journeys for drivers. After 20 years of use, modernization was necessary to ensure it can continue fulfilling its role,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The Wąbrzeźno bypass was built between 2005 and 2006. The project included the construction of the roadway, shoulders, intersections (including three roundabouts), a drainage system, street lighting, and the relocation of conflicting utility infrastructure. The nearly 8-kilometre route along regional roads No. 534 and 548 completely diverted transit traffic away from the town centre. In 2015, an additional safe roundabout was built at the junction of the bypass and Kętrzyńskiego Street. The investment cost more than PLN 26 million and was made possible through European Union funding.
The completed modernization will ensure many more years of safe and comfortable use of this important route. The works included:
- Improving the road’s technical parameters,
- Restoring the roadway surface to its original condition (including the installation of reinforcing fiberglass mesh between new pavement layers),
- Renovating existing intersections and property access roads,
- Repairing the surfaces of existing shoulders (using part of the milled pavement material),
- Improving drainage infrastructure through the renovation of culverts and the restoration, cleaning, and reshaping of roadside ditches and embankments,
- Renovating sidewalks (including a new sub-base and relaying concrete paving blocks),
- Restoring vertical and horizontal road markings (using thick-layer markings),
- Installing road safety equipment.
The truck aprons on the central islands of the three roundabouts (Chełmińskie, Bydgoskie and Toruńskie Roundabouts) were also renovated. Among other improvements, a 20-centimetre wearing course made of reinforced concrete was applied to minimize the risk of damage in these particularly vulnerable sections. The contractor was PBD of Starogard Gdański, which has provided a five-year warranty following project completion. The PLN 11.5 million project was financed from the regional budget.
Safer Crossings and Bus Platforms
This year, further investments aimed at improving road safety and user comfort will be implemented across Wąbrzeźno County. Work is nearing completion on additional lighting for pedestrian crossings and bus stops located on:
- Regional Road No. 534 in Jarantowice, Wąbrzeźno and Wałycz,
- Regional Road No. 551 in Węgorzyn, Ryńsk, Nielub and Wąbrzeźno.
The project also included the construction of new bus platforms and sidewalks. In addition to enhanced lighting, special features were introduced to improve orientation for visually impaired and blind people. These projects form part of the Marshal’s pedestrian safety programme, which received funding from the Government Road Development Fund.
New Roadways, Shoulders and Signage
Contracts have also been signed for the reconstruction of additional sections of regional roads:
- Regional Road No. 551 Dźwierzno – Orzechowo, length: 5 km, value: PLN 9.6 million, contractor: Zakład Drogowo-Budowlany Rogowo,
- Regional Road No. 551 Nielub – Wąbrzeźno, length: 2 km, value: PLN 4.2 million, contractor: Drobud,
- Regional Road No. 554 Orzechowo – Sierakowo, length: 4 km, value: PLN 7.5 million, contractor: Zakład Drogowo-Budowlany Rogowo.
The scope of work on all sections includes laying new pavement, restoring road shoulders, improving drainage through ditch reconstruction, and installing new vertical and horizontal road markings. The projects are scheduled for completion in autumn.
Record Investment in Roads
PLN 2 billion will be allocated to the regional programme for the modernization of Regional roads in the coming years. Under the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze 2021-2027 (FEdKP 2021-2027), the region’s operational programme for the current EU funding perspective, €136 million has been earmarked for road investments, including the regional bypass construction programme.
Additional central government funding will also support the expansion of road infrastructure, including approximately PLN 170 million for bypass projects and around PLN 450 million for the modernization of other roads.
