Kalwaria Pakoska Attracts Pilgrims and Tourists
This site is known as the “Jerusalem of Kujawy” and is the second-largest Passion sanctuary complex in Poland after Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. It was established in the first half of the 17th century on the initiative of Father Wojciech Kęsicki, and the first Stations of the Cross procession followed its paths as early as the spring of 1628. The unique spatial layout of the complex was modeled on the topography of Jerusalem. In the landscape of Pakość, visitors can find counterparts of the Mount of Olives, Golgotha, and the Kidron Valley.
“The magnificent monuments of Kalwaria Pakoska bear witness to the rich traditions of this part of our region and are an invaluable treasure of Pałuki and Kujawy. For years, this unique place has attracted residents of the region as well as pilgrims from across the country, becoming one of the most important tourist attractions of the region. In 2028, we will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first Stations of the Cross procession that passed through these hills and marked the beginning of the extraordinary history of this place,” emphasized Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
Thanks to support from the Regional Operational Programme of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, the complex underwent extensive revitalization in 2013. The project “Creation of the Kalwaria Pakoska Cultural Park as an Element of the Promotion of the Heritage of Kujawy and Pałuki” received more than PLN 8 million in funding. The initiator of the revitalization programme was Father Dacjan Marczak, who was honored in the Marshal’s “Heritage of Centuries” competition.
The Calvary complex consists of 24 Baroque chapels and the Church of the Crucified Jesus. For nearly four hundred years, spectacular Passion plays have been staged here, attracting pilgrims from all over Poland, especially during Lent and the Paschal Triduum.
Today, Kalwaria Pakoska remains not only an important place of religious worship, but also one of the most valuable historical and landscape attractions of the Kujawy region, particularly the Pałuki area.
