We invite you to theatre premieres

Based on the works of Voltaire, “Candide, or Optimism,” and “Waiters’ Tango,” a musical story about Toruń at the beginning of the 20th century—these are the latest premieres that will be presented this weekend (Saturday, 25 April and Sunday, 26 April) on the stages of the Horzyca Theatre and the Musical Theatre.

“We invite you to two performances that differ in form and message, yet are equally engaging and—I’m convinced—will gain the audience’s interest and appreciation,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

“Candide, or Optimism,” directed by Sławomir Narloch, is a multi-layered story about a young man trying to find his place in a collapsing world.

“When you read the text today, even though it dates back to the late 18th century, what stands out is how relevant it remains. Everywhere the main character appears, there are wars and terrible events. It’s hard to escape the impression that the story described by Voltaire keeps repeating itself endlessly—that people, for some reason, keep ruining their own world,” says director Sławomir Narloch in the Horzyca Theatre podcast Ucho Horzycy.

Further performances of “Candide” will run from Tuesday (28 April) to Sunday (5 May).

The production “Waiters’ Tango,” directed by Jakub Przebindowski and presented at the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Musical Theatre, takes audiences back to Toruń in 1901.

“We focus on the community of waiters and service staff, revealing a mysterious world full of professional complexities, as well as on a group of artists working in cabarets and garden revues. We get to know a community that works beyond its limits and is often exploited, yet still maintains its professional ethos and principles,” explains director Jakub Przebindowski.

“Waiters’ Tango” will also be performed on Sunday (26 April) and in early May.

On Saturday (25 April), Gaetano Donizetti’s opera “Lucia di Lammermoor,” directed by Thaddeus Strassberger, will inaugurate the 32nd Bydgoszcz Opera Festival. The program includes performances and operas by theatres from the Netherlands, Latvia, Monaco, and Poland.

The regional government runs 17 cultural institutions offering a wide range of artistic programs:
