Our “The Road Less Traveled” heads out on the festival circuit
The production directed by Zuzanna Grabowska, supported by the Kujawy Pomorze Film Fund, will soon premiere at the Kino na Granicy Festival in Cieszyn. It will later be screened for audiences at Tofifest in Toruń.
This will be the third film premiere this year supported by the Self-Government of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region. In March, Dobry chłopiec by Jan Komasa was released in Polish cinemas, and last week the first screening of Morderstwo w filharmonii by Maciej Hydr took place at the CKK Jordanki.
“The Road Less Traveled” marks the directorial debut of actress Zuzanna Grabowska. The film was shot in our region, mainly in Górzno and Szubin. The protagonists—Julia (Grabowska) and Weronika (Agata Wątróbska)—reunite to travel together to a friend’s funeral. The journey becomes an opportunity to revisit past experiences and unresolved issues that have shaped their relationship over the years. Supporting roles are played by, among others, Andrzej Grabowski, Janusz Chabior, Mirosław Zbrojewicz, and Paweł Domagała, who is also the film’s producer.
“The Road Less Traveled” will be shown for the first time on May 3 as the closing film of the Kino na Granicy Festival in Cieszyn. The premiere and Q&A session will be attended by the cast and creators.
“Choosing this year’s closing film, I had no doubts. The Road Less Traveled is a film that offers both pleasure and emotion while addressing an important theme. It tells the story of two women separated by life, only to be reunited in the face of losing a third friend,” says Łukasz Maciejewski, the festival’s artistic director. “This is the kind of cinema I look for—thought-provoking, visually engaging but not superficial, and superbly acted. Perfect for a festival like Kino na Granicy.”
“Zuzanna Grabowska directs this story with a confident hand, combining direction with a leading role. The outstanding Agata Wątróbska, also co-author of the screenplay, brings heart, sensitivity, and talent to the film. In the background, we see a changing Polish countryside, our traditions and customs,” Maciejewski adds.
The Kino na Granicy Festival will take place from April 29 to May 3 in Cieszyn and Český Těšín. Established in 1999, the festival showcases Polish, Czech, and Slovak productions, as well as retrospectives of film artists.
“The Road Less Traveled” was produced in cooperation with the Kujawy Pomorze Film Fund and with support from European funds under a project promoting local micro-, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a particular focus on the creative sector through product and service placement in film.
After its Cieszyn premiere, Grabowska’s film will also be screened at this year’s edition of Tofifest in Toruń.
Zuzanna Grabowska is an actress, screenwriter, and director, and a graduate of the Theatre Academy in Warsaw. She made her debut at the age of 11 in the TV Theatre production “Mały lord”. Five years later, she appeared in the series Świat według Kiepskich, in which her father, Andrzej Grabowski, played the lead role. She gained wider recognition through the series Czas honoru, portraying Nina Jacewicz, a Pawiak prison inmate and later a Gestapo collaborator. Together with her husband, Paweł Domagała, she co-creates the Kabaret na Koniec Świata.
