A classic crime story with a generous dose of humor – that’s the simplest way to describe the latest film shot in Bydgoszcz, directed by Maciej Hydra, Murder at the Philharmonic. The premiere of the production, supported by the regional government, took place at the Jordanki Cultural and Congress Center in Toruń, with Marshal Piotr Całbecki and Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski in attendance.
“This isn’t the first production we’ve supported. Many outstanding works have already been completed with our backing, and we are very proud of them. They promote our region as friendly to film and culture. I hope this film will also win the hearts of millions. We keep our fingers crossed for its success at festivals,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki at the premiere.
The film was shot in the hospitable halls of the Pomeranian Philharmonic, at Radio PiK, and on the streets of Bydgoszcz.
It is set in the artistic circles of 1970s Poland and is a treat for fans of classic crime stories and good humor. The story is told with a wink, and the creators’ lighthearted approach to the genre is one of the film’s greatest strengths – alongside the cast.
Jarosław Boberek delivers a standout performance in the lead role as Captain Wróbel, the investigator. The cast also includes Piotr Głowacki and Aleksandra Hamkało. A Q&A with the filmmakers followed the premiere screening.
The production was co-financed by the regional government through the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Film Fund with PLN 600,000. This is the second film premiere this year supported by the Fund.
In March, Good Boy by Jan Komasa hit cinemas, and upcoming premieres include Death Candidates by Maciej Cuske, Piernikarki by Ryszard Kruk, and The Less Traveled Road by Zuzanna Grabowska, also filmed in our region.
So far, 20 productions have received support, with more planned. In May, outdoor scenes for Krzysztof Zanussi’s latest film Całopalenie (premiering later this year) will be shot in Toruń and surrounding areas. Another upcoming project is Fake Fiancé 2 by Bartosz Prokopowicz, scheduled for a winter release.
Marshal Piotr Całbecki also awards the Pola Negri Film Prize to outstanding contributors to cinema. So far, 23 people have received the statuette, including Krzysztof Zanussi, Jerzy Skolimowski, Jan Englert, Daniel Olbrychski, Katarzyna Figura, Magdalena Różczka, and Agnieszka Dulęba-Kasza. This year, the award will go to actor Zbigniew Suszyński, born in Rypin.
The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Parliament has declared 2026 the Year of Film People from Kujawsko-Pomorskie.
