World Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26: four medals for Poland!

The World Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26 are behind us. What an emotional event it was! The Polish team won four medals (gold for Jakub Szymański – 60 m hurdles, silver for Natalia Bukowiecka – 400 m, and bronze for the mixed relay team of Kajetan Duszyński, Anna Gryc, Marcin Karolewski and Justyna Święty-Ersetic, as well as bronze for hurdler Pia Skrzyszowska). In the medal table we finished ninth, and in the points classification we placed second! Detailed results are available at worldathletics.org.

These were championships full of great emotions and beautiful victories! Our athletes showed character, fighting spirit, and world-class level,” emphasized Marshal Piotr Całbecki. “The joy and emotion they gave us will stay in the memory of every fan for a long time. Congratulations and thank you!

We didn’t have to wait long for the first medal. The bronze was won by the mixed relay team of Kajetan Duszyński, Anna Gryc, Marcin Karolewski, and Justyna Święty-Ersetic. The race was extremely close. The Polish team stayed near the leaders throughout all laps and initially crossed the finish line in fourth place. However, after the disqualification of the Jamaican team, which had finished ahead of them, Poland moved up to third place and secured the bronze medal. Belgium won, with Spain finishing second.

During Saturday’s afternoon session, Polish fans were especially eager to watch the runners. The unbeatable Jakub Szymański—who won all his races that day, including the morning heats, semifinal, and final—defeated the world’s best and crossed the finish line in 7.40, winning Poland’s first-ever gold medal in the 60 m hurdles.

More reasons to celebrate came from Natalia Bukowiecka, who won her final race with a time of 50.83, equaling her national record. The second heat was won by Czech athlete Lurdes Gloria Manuel. After comparing the results of both heats, Natalia Bukowiecka secured the silver medal.

Yesterday (March 22), our phenomenal hurdler Pia Skrzyszowska won the bronze medal. She performed excellently in the semifinal, clocking 7.76 seconds, and ran even faster in the final—7.73 seconds—setting a new Polish record. She narrowly lost to Dutch athlete Nadine Visser. The winner was Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who equaled the world record with a time of 7.65.

On the eve of the World Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26, Marshal Piotr Całbecki met with Polish athletes to present them with official nominations. “It was a very emotional moment,” he recalls. “Each of our athletes is not only an competitor, but also an ambassador of Polish sport and the values it represents—determination, passion, and hard work.”
