Film “Polityka Passport” for Emi Buchwald

For many years, the Self-Government of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region has been a partner of the prestigious Polityka weekly’s award in the film category, and one of this year’s nominees was also a laureate of our regional film award.

The Polityka Passports are awarded annually to talented Polish creators in seven categories: film, book, stage, visual arts, classical music, popular music, and digital culture.

The winners of the 33rd edition of the 2025 awards were announced on Sunday evening during a gala broadcast live on TVP2. In the film category, partnered by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Self-Government, the nominees were: director and screenwriter Emi Buchwald; Kordian Kądziela, co-director of the popular Netflix series 1670; and actor Eryk Kulm, who starred in the films The Boxer, Filip, and the latest work by director Michał Kwieciński, Chopin, Chopin!. This production – one of the most expensive in the history of Polish cinema (with a budget of 72 million PLN) – was financially supported by our Kujawy Pomorze Film Fund. In November, during the 33rd Camerimage Festival in Toruń, Kulm received the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Film Award named after Pola Negri from Piotr Całbecki.

The Passport ultimately went to Emi Buchwald for her feature-film debut There Are No Ghosts in the Apartment on Dobra Street.
“For her confidence in creating an intimate atmosphere and for her bold turn toward metaphysics, for a tender and unconventional portrait of a young generation entangled in complex family relationships in the film There Are No Ghosts in the Apartment on Dobra Street,” reads the jury’s justification.

“I always think in situations like this that if I get the award, that’s great – but if I don’t, that’s also great, because I won’t have to speak on stage,” said the winner after receiving the Passport. “But I do understand this decision, because my passport expires next week.”

At the 50th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, Buchwald’s film received three awards, including Best Director, and journalists named There Are No Ghosts in the Apartment on Dobra Street the best film of the festival.

It is also worth noting that in the Visual Arts category, the Passport went to Toruń-born artist Ant Łakomsk.

“For art that intriguingly combines intellectual exploration with mystery-tinged emotion. For a successful attempt to create a distinctive form of painting that stands out not through spectacle, but through an intimate dialogue with the viewer,” the jury explained.

The Polityka Passports honor young artists who have had a particularly strong impact on the development of Polish culture in a given year. In the first stage, 52 experts nominate the most interesting creators; from among them, the jury selects three nominees in each category and then chooses the winners.
