The Heart of Athletics Beats in Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region

Preparations for the Kujawy Pomorze 26 Indoor World Championships are entering their final phase. Today (8 December), Marshal Piotr Całbecki and Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska met with the visiting Minister of Sport and Tourism, Jakub Rutnicki, and the President of the Polish Athletic Association, Sebastian Chmara.

The program of the visit in Bydgoszcz included a meeting at the Regional Rowing Society Lotto Bydgostia (RTW Lotto Bydgostia) club and a tour of Hala Zawisza, culminating in a press conference with Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska, Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivode Michał Sztybel, Mayor of Bydgoszcz Rafał Bruski, and MPs Magdalena Łośko and Iwona Karolewska.

“It is a great honour and a source of pride for me that our Region is presented as a model of modern sports infrastructure. Thanks to the cooperation of the regional self-government, the Ministry of Sport, and the city authorities of Bydgoszcz, today’s meeting in this fantastic hall is possible  –  a facility that will soon be available to athletes and fans,” said Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska at the press conference. “The regional self-government consistently supports the construction of sports infrastructure, funds scholarships and awards for athletes, and implements projects promoting sports among children and youth. These actions contribute directly to the development of sport in Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.”

RTW Lotto Bydgostia is the most decorated club in Poland. Its alumni regularly represent the region and the country at international sporting events, forming the core of crews that win medals. The regional assembly awarded the club the Stella Copernicana Cuiaviae et Pomeraniae prize, and long-time president Zygfryd Żurawski received the Honorary Badge for Merits to the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

Construction work at the Bydgoszcz Zawisza complex is nearing completion. The two-story building will feature a 6,500 m² multi-functional indoor athletics hall with a six-lane oval track, an eight-lane straight track, facilities for shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault, as well as a shooting hall. The total investment cost is PLN 84 million, with PLN 14 million supported by the regional government.

The afternoon press conference at the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Arena Toruń – the venue for next year’s competitions – was preceded by the presentation of awards to the winners of the Children’s Games  – the Toruń Olympics for Preschools and Schools, and a meeting at the Municipal Athletics Club Toruń (MKL Toruń).

At the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Arena Toruń, the athletics surface has already been replaced to meet the standards set by World Athletics. Additional works include a new access road to the hall, updated directional signage, a modernised Wi-Fi system, and new fibre-optic networks. Finishing work is ongoing at the warm-up stadium.
