Improving Safety on Regional Roads

Work is underway to rebuild and illuminate pedestrian crossings and bus stops along voivodeship roads. In many locations – especially near schools – speed displays are also being installed to encourage safer driving. The total cost of the project exceeds PLN 17 million.

Every year we modernize around one hundred kilometres of regional roads,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki. “Our priority is the safety of all road users. That’s why we not only modernize roads, build bicycle paths and redesign critical intersections, but also implement a program to equip regional routes with illuminated pedestrian crossings and bus stops. This is our response to residents’ expectations.”

The entire package includes the illumination of 247 pedestrian crossings, the construction of 22 bus stops, 5 bus bays, and the installation of 18 speed displays at key crossings. In many places, new sidewalk sections are also being added.

Initial work began on:

  • Road 252 in Bądkowo (Aleksandrów County)
  • Road 317 in Kruszyn (Włocławek County)
  • Road 560 between Brodnica and Rypin

Contractors are laying cables, installing foundations for new light poles, and mounting LED fittings.

Upcoming projects will cover:

  • Road 241 Kcynia–Tuchola (40 crossings, 2 stops, 3 displays – Nakło, Sępólno, and Tuchola Counties)
  • Road 251 Żnin–Inowrocław (29 crossings, 1 stop – Żnin and Inowrocław Counties)
  • Road 252 Inowrocław–Włocławek (20 crossings, 4 displays – Inowrocław, Aleksandrów, and Włocławek Counties)
  • Road 255 Pakość–Strzelno (2 crossings – Inowrocław County)
  • Road 317 Włocławek–Kruszyn (6 crossings, 2 stops – Włocławek County)
  • Road 412 Inowrocław–Kruszwica (2 crossings, 4 bus bays – Inowrocław County)
  • Road 534 Grudziądz–Rypin (37 crossings, 3 stops, 1 display – Grudziądz, Wąbrzeźno, Golub-Dobrzyń, and Rypin Counties)
  • Road 551 Strzyżawa–Wąbrzeźno (43 crossings, 10 stops, 4 displays – Bydgoszcz, Chełmno, Toruń, and Wąbrzeźno Counties)
  • Road 552 Świerczynki–Lubicz (19 crossings, 2 stops, 2 displays – Toruń County)
  • Road 553 Toruń–Wybcz (29 crossings, 2 stops, 2 displays)
  • Road 560 Brodnica–regional border (20 crossings, 1 bus bay, 2 displays – Brodnica and Rypin Counties)

The regional government will allocate over PLN 17 million to improve road safety, particularly for pedestrians. Half of the funding comes from the Government Road Development Fund, and the program is expected to be completed next year.

In recent months, speed displays have been installed in several locations, especially near educational facilities:

  • Mycielewo (Road 247, Nakło County)
  • Pakość (Road 255, Inowrocław County)
  • Żnin (Road 251, Żnin County)
  • Maksymilianowo (Road 244, Bydgoszcz County)
  • Bramka (Road 240, Świecie County)
  • Gruczno (Road 245, Świecie County)
  • Stolno (Road 548, Chełmno County)
  • Golub-Dobrzyń (Road 554, Golub-Dobrzyń County)
  • Obrowo (Road 258, Toruń County)
  • Osięciny (Road 267, Radziejów County)
  • Łaszewo (Road 544, Brodnica County)
  • Morzyce (Road 267, Radziejów County)

Further displays will soon appear in:

  • Kosowo (Road 241, Nakło County)
  • Strzelce Dolne (Road 256, Bydgoszcz County)
  • Bieganowo (Road 266, Radziejów County)
  • Żabno (Road 254, Mogilno County)
  • Wieniec (Road 268, Włocławek County)
  • Nowy Dwór (Road 544, Grudziądz County)

Approximately PLN 350,000 will be spent on the purchase and installation of these devices. Earlier, the regional government also launched a dangerous intersections elimination program, under which 23 intersections will be rebuilt at a cost of PLN 72 million.

Record investments in road infrastructure

A total of PLN 2 billion will be allocated to the regional road modernization program for the coming years. Under the European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie 2021–2027 (EFKP), EUR 136 million is dedicated to road investments, including the regional bypass construction program. Additional national co-financing amounts to approximately PLN 170 million for bypasses and PLN 450 million for other road upgrades.
