They Have Been Educating Artists and Designers for Eight Decades

The Leon Wyczółkowski State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Bydgoszcz is celebrating its 80th anniversary. Tomorrow (October 24), a ceremonial jubilee will take place to mark this milestone for one of the oldest and most distinguished art schools in the region.

The celebrations will begin at the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship Office in Bydgoszcz. Next, the Municipal Gallery BWA will host the grand opening of the 17th National Review of Distinguished Diploma Works from the North-Western Macroregion. Another highlight of the program will be the unveiling of a jubilee mural and spatial forms created by the school’s students and teachers, located at the school building. The festivities will conclude with the opening of an exhibition of works by the PLSP teaching staff. Marshal Piotr Całbecki has honored the school with the Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis medal.

The school’s history dates back to 1945, when it was founded on the initiative of Marian Turwid — an artist, writer, and cultural animator. Today, as the Leon Wyczółkowski State Secondary School of Fine Arts, it educates young people in four specializations: graphic design, multimedia design, artistic printmaking techniques, and artistic design.

For eight decades, the institution has combined art education with general academic learning, nurturing generations of artists and designers. Its students and graduates have achieved numerous successes in national and international art competitions and Olympiads. Many have received scholarships from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage as well as from the Prime Minister. The school also consistently ranks highly in the Perspektywy magazine’s listings of art secondary schools.

The Leon Wyczółkowski State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Bydgoszcz has long been an active participant in the cultural life of the region, cooperating with numerous institutions and social organizations while implementing artistic projects. For over thirty years, it has maintained an artistic exchange with Adolph-Kolping-Schule in Münster (Germany). Thanks to its cooperation with the Starak Family Foundation, young artists can further develop their talents through the “Wena” grant program.

One of the school’s most recognizable projects is the Christmas nativity scene, displayed each year in front of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń.
