Górzno-Lidzbark Landscape Park – 35 Years of Nature Protection
Extremely diverse and distinctive landforms, vast forest complexes, picturesque lakes and river valleys, varied vegetation, rich fauna, and a well-integrated settlement network — this briefly characterizes the natural environment of the Górzno-Lidzbark Landscape Park, which this year celebrates its 35th anniversary. To mark the occasion, a jubilee conference will be held on October 15 in Górzno (Brodnica County).
“The Górzno-Lidzbark Landscape Park is a charming area with unique natural, scenic, and cultural values. Numerous hiking and cycling trails attract tourists and lovers of active recreation. It is a true natural gem located at the junction of three provinces,”
says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
To celebrate the park’s 35th anniversary, a special conference will take place at the ‘Wilga’ Ecological Education Center in Górzno, with the participation of naturalists from Nicolaus Copernicus University, representatives of the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz, organizers of the increasingly popular GLPK Gravel cycling race held near Górzno, and the park’s management.
Conference Program
The Górznieńsko-Lidzbarski Landscape Park (GLPK) was established in 1990 under an agreement between the Voivodes of Toruń and Ciechanów, to protect the unique natural, scenic, and cultural values of this region. It spans the border area of three regions: Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Warmiańsko-Mazurskie, and Mazowieckie Region.
The park is appreciated by scientists — whose long-term research contributed to its creation — and valued for its tourism and recreation potential. In 1993, the entire park area was included in the “Green Lungs of Poland.”
A key asset of the GLPK is its vast forest complexes, covering about 70% of its area. Walking among the trees, one can often find places of true “primeval forest” character. The park’s high natural value is confirmed by the establishment of two Natura 2000 habitat protection areas and seven nature reserves within its borders.
The park’s northern part, around Górzno and Fiałki, as well as the Brynica River Valley, are particularly attractive in terms of topography. Scenic lakes further enhance the park’s landscape.
The Brynica River, the park’s main watercourse, is considered its symbol. Near the village of Buczkowo, the river takes on the character of a mountain stream, carving a deep and steep ravine with slopes reaching 40 meters, covered with valuable old-growth forest. Due to its exceptional natural and scenic qualities, the ravine has been protected as a nature reserve since 1955.
The park is home to over 900 species of vascular plants, many of which are strictly protected — including several mountain species.
In the park, you may encounter white-tailed eagles, red kites, black storks, lesser spotted eagles, kingfishers, and greylag geese. While wandering through the diverse habitats, one can often hear the distinctive “klangor” — the call of cranes, which have been recognized as the symbol of GLPK and proudly feature in its logo.
The park’s vertebrate fauna includes over 250 species. Alongside commonly seen wild boars, hares, badgers, roe deer, and red deer, moose and wolves are increasingly observed. Notably, about one-quarter of the park’s mammal species are bats — 11 species have been recorded here.
GLPK’s natural richness is complemented by numerous natural monuments and historical and cultural landmarks, such as old churches, peasant cottages, forges, stables, remains of old mills, and medieval hillforts.
