Regional railways are speeding up
The railway network operator PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) is carrying out investments on 150 kilometers of tracks in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region. In just a few months, our regional passenger trains will reach speeds of 160 km/h on the renovated sections.
– Our regional railways are speeding up. This year we are restoring connections to Ciechocinek, next year to Rypin and Wierzchucin, and then to Kcynia. The train, an ecological means of transport, is becoming an increasingly better alternative to the car, emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The railway line no. 201, connecting Bydgoszcz with the Tuchola Forest and the Tri-City (the historic coal trunk line), is the most important for freight traffic and one of the busiest for passenger traffic in Poland. PKP PLK has just announced a tender for a thorough modernization of the 32-kilometer section between Maksymilianowo and Wierzchucin. The works will include, among other things, the construction of tracks and power lines, renovation of stations and stops, and upgrades to safety systems.
The reconstruction of the station in Maksymilianowo, where two major railway lines (no. 131 and 201) intersect, is expected to cost nearly PLN 2 billion. PKP PLK is currently selecting the contractor for the project, which will include the reconstruction of three platforms and 38 kilometers of tracks.
Coal trunk line modernization costs:
- PLN 1.8 billion – Maksymilianowo station
- PLN 1.3 billion – Wierzchucin – Lipowa Tucholska tracks
- PLN 1.2 billion – Maksymilianowo – Wierzchucin tracks
Line 201 serves, among others, our daily train from Bydgoszcz (via Wierzchucin) to Tuchola. Once all works are completed, passenger trains will run here at speeds of up to 160 km/h (currently up to 120 km/h), and freight trains at 120 km/h (currently up to 80 km/h). The project will be completed in 2029.
In December 2026, regional trains will also return to the route from Rypin to Brodnica. The relaunch of the connection is preceded by the renovation of the 50-kilometer section Rypin – Brodnica – Jabłonowo Pomorskie (lines no. 33 and 208). The works will include track and sleeper replacement, repair of engineering structures (bridges, viaducts, culverts), level crossings, and platform renovations. The investment will cost PLN 141 million.
Kcynia (Nakło County) will gain a rail connection with Wągrowiec (Wielkopolskie Region) and Nakło nad Notecią. On lines no. 356 and 281, PKP PLK plans to replace tracks, sleepers, and ballast, renovate stops, and build a passing loop between Kcynia and Nakło. After the renovation (worth PLN 47 million), train speeds here will reach 120 km/h.
As part of the BiT City II project, PKP PLK will modernize the section of line no. 353 Toruń Miasto – Toruń Wschodni (a second track will be built under Toruń Peace Square). Every day, 100 Regional Marshal’s trains pass through this section. The total value of the project is PLN 686 million, with PLN 551 million co-financing from the FEnIKS program (EU Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021-2027). The tender will be announced this autumn, and the investment is scheduled to be completed in 2028.
This year, the regional self-government is financing passenger services with PLN 240 million and owns three-quarters of the rolling stock serving these connections.
