A life full of numbers, books and values – 100 years of Mrs Halina

Halina Jędryka from Bydgoszcz, a university teacher valued by generations of students for her clarity of lecture and passion for mathematics, celebrated her 100th birthday. On this occasion, Zbigniew Ostrowski, Deputy Marshall of the Voivodeship, presented the jubilarian with the Marshal’s Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis medal, in recognition of her services to the region and its inhabitants.

May the kindness you bestow on others return strengthened by the care, affection and attention of your loved ones. May each day bring you joy, love and support,” wishes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Mrs Halina was born on 12 May 1925 in Ostrów Wielkopolski as an only child. Her father was a farmer who managed several landed estates. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the family moved to Poznań, where Halina attended Father Czesław Piotrowski’s Private Female Gymnasium in Łazarz.

She spent the war time working as a forced labourer in the industrial plants in Poznań, which before the war were called Zakłady Hipolita Cegielskiego. After the war, she passed her secondary school-leaving examinations and took up studies in mathematics at Adam Mickiewicz University, after which she began her scientific career at Poznan University of Technology.

In the 1960s she moved to Bydgoszcz, where she taught mathematics for many years at the Higher School of Engineering, and later at the Higher School of Pedagogy – now Kazimierz Wielki University. She combined her teaching and research work with educational and social activities.

In 1952 she married the mathematician Tadeusz Jędryka. The couple carried out scientific activities together, working both in Poznań and Bydgoszcz. They had three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Although mathematics was her lifelong passion, over the years Halina also became interested in theology – which she studied as an adult – and history. She has always enjoyed reading books and today, despite her sight problems, she enjoys listening to audio books and the radio. She likes to spend her free time on the terrace, enjoying the contact with nature.

The regional government has been honouring centenarians in the region since 2018. Families of the region’s residents who are about to turn one hundred years old, as well as those who are older, are encouraged to get in touch by calling 56 62 18 344 and emailing stulatkowie@kujawsko-pomorskie.pl.
