Mrs. Michalina Kosicka Celebrates Her 100th Birthday
With a smile, energy, and a cup of coffee – with cream and several teaspoons of sugar, of course – Mrs. Michalina Kosicka celebrated her 100th birthday. A resident of Zalesie (Nakło County), known for her cheerful spirit and love of life, marked the occasion on April 14 surrounded by her loved ones. She was also visited by Dariusz Kurzawa, a Member of the Regional Executive Board, who presented her with the Marshal’s Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis medal.
“They are a treasure trove of experience, good advice, and memories. May each day bring them joy and be filled with love and support,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
Mrs. Michalina, née Mistrzak, was born in 1925 in Górki Dąbskie, Nakło County. She grew up in a large, warm-hearted family with ten siblings. Her childhood was a time of simplicity and togetherness, but also hard work – at just 14, she had to leave school to begin working. The war years left a deep mark on her life: displacement, escape, daily struggle for survival, and the harsh realities of forced labor.
After the war, Mrs. Michalina became involved in community work – she was active in the scouting movement and the Polish Red Cross. Always with a heart for others, she not only raised four children but also helped her neighbors, supported those in need, and shared what she had. Her home was filled with warmth, the smell of home-cooked meals, and cherished family traditions.
On November 29, 1949, she married Walerian Kosicki, who had spent five years in the resistance movement. Together, they built a home that remains a gathering place for generations. Mrs. Michalina has eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who proudly listen to her stories, admire her vitality, and… sneak candies from her candy dish.
Though she has reached one hundred years of age, she hasn’t lost her spirit. To this day, she plays the harmonica, passionately watches nature documentaries, and reminisces about her youth with humor. She still remembers the taste of penny candy and dances to the sound of a comb.
“You need someone to live for, no complaining… and allow yourself sweet pleasures!” says the centenarian. Perhaps this wise balance – between work and joy, between giving to others and moments of carefree delight – is her secret to longevity?
The regional self-government has been honoring 100-year-old residents since 2018, and over 470 people have received the Unitas Durat medal to date.
