Happy birthday and more!

On 5 April, Mrs Halina Krassowska, a resident of Inowrocław, and Mrs Genowefa Morek from Zamarty in the Sępólno district celebrated their 100th birthdays. Their life stories could serve as ready-made film scripts. Forced labour, a vulcanisation workshop, nursing the sick and social work – with their fortitude and commitment, they both left a lasting mark on the hearts of many people. During the ceremony, the jubilarians were honoured with the marshal’s Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis medals.

Halina Krassowska was born on 5 April 1925 in Lubraniec in the Wloclawek district and was associated with this place for most of her life. During the war she was forced to work on a German farm. After the end of hostilities, she devoted herself entirely to serving others – she became a nurse. Her sensitivity and commitment earned her great respect in the community.

Children adored her – she organised excursions, camping trips and taught swimming. She was active in her parish, involved in scouting and charity work. She was always extremely gifted with her hands – all her life she created knitting, crocheted and knitted jumpers to give to her neighbours and friends. Although she has lived in Inowrocław for more than 20 years, she still maintains close contact with Lubraniec.

On the occasion of her jubilee, the president of the regional parliament, Elżbieta Piniewska, visited her. The guests included family, former neighbours and friends.

Genowefa Morek was born on 4 April 1925 in Sępólno Krajeńskie. During the war, as a very young girl, she was forced to work in a shipyard in Gdańsk, where she learned self-reliance and fortitude. After the war, she returned to her hometown, started a family and raised three children. When she became a widow, she successfully ran a vulcanisation business.

In 1986, she remarried and settled in Scotland for a while. Today, despite being a hundred years old, Mrs Genowefa still surprises with her energy and cheerfulness. Known for her beautiful voice, she sang in the Sepolno church choir for many years. She studied at the University of the Third Age, and her passions – crocheting, books and learning foreign languages – fill her daily life. She has visited half of Europe, but it is in Zamartem that she feels at home.

On the day of the jubilee, she was visited by regional councillor Anna Niewiadomska. Jarosław Tadych, starost of Sępólno, and Waldemar Stupałkowski, mayor of Sępólno, also attended the ceremonial meeting.

The regional government has been honouring the region’s centenarians since 2018, with over four hundred and fifty people having received the Unitas Durat medal to date.
