NATO-Ukraine Centre in Bydgoszcz

The NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Center (JATEC) is another significant institution of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) that was inaugurated today (February 17) in Bydgoszcz. Its mission is to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces in achieving full interoperability with NATO, as well as to facilitate the exchange of experiences from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Poland’s Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska, and Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The establishment of the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre is an important initiative in the current international situation. I am confident that here in Bydgoszcz, through the cooperation of NATO troops and the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Europe’s defense capabilities will improve. The activities of this institution will also have a tangible impact on enhancing the sense of security for the residents of our region,” emphasized Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The ceremony was also attended by high-ranking Ukrainian officials, NATO and Polish Armed Forces officers, and local government representatives, including Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Admiral Pierre Vandier, Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna, Voivode Michał Sztybel, and Mayor of Bydgoszcz Rafał Bruski.

In February 2024, NATO-Ukraine Council defense ministers approved the establishment of the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre (JATEC) in Bydgoszcz. The unit is commanded by General Wojciech Ozga. The centre in Bydgoszcz brings together military and civilian personnel, whose mission is to enhance the security and defense capabilities of allied forces.

Bydgoszcz is also home to several other NATO institutions, including the Joint Force Training Centre (JFTC), the NATO Force Integration Unit, the NATO Communications Battalion, the NATO Military Police Centre of Excellence, and the NATO Communications and Information Systems Support Unit (based at JFTC). Additionally, the city hosts the International School of Bydgoszcz, which provides education for the children of NATO officers and personnel.

Another key NATO institution for the regional government is JFTC, which has been honored with the highest regional award—the Stella Copernicana Cuiaviae et Pomeraniae statuette. Marshal Piotr Całbecki personally bid farewell to the outgoing commander, Major General Norbert Wagner, and welcomed the new commander, Major General Bogdan Rycerski.
