Investing in modern rolling stock

Seventy-five per cent of the trains running regional passenger services belong to the regional government. We have thirty-three vehicles at our disposal, which will travel 6.5 million kilometres this year. The Marshall’s fleet of rail vehicles is growing steadily. Seven more modern trains ordered from Pesa Bydgoszcz will soon be on the tracks.

 

We are consistently investing in improving the quality of passenger transport. By systematically investing in modern rolling stock, we are meeting passengers’ expectations. Improving the comfort and safety of their journeys is one of the priorities of the regional government,’ stressed Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

 

All our vehicles are equipped with air-conditioning, places to carry bicycles, monitoring, and have been adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. The trains are quiet, consume less energy and the fastest trains reach speeds of 160 km/h.

 

Our rolling stock:

  • 15 electric multiple units,
  • 13 railbuses,
  • 5 trailing coaches.

 

The regional government is systematically investing in the purchase of modern trains to replace older units. In 2027, seven modern electric trains will be in service – air-conditioned, energy-efficient and packed with electronics – produced by Pesa Bydgoszcz. The trains now in production are four-car trainsets carrying 360 passengers (160 seated and 200 standing, equipped with facilities facilitating travel for people in wheelchairs and bicycle racks. The purchase is financed with, among others, funds from the European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie (EFKP) 2021-2027 and the government. The cost of the seven train sets ordered by the local government is more than PLN 329 million.

 

The Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship regional government’s investment in rolling stock to date (after taking inflation into account) has amounted to more than PLN 571.4 million. Currently, 75% of passenger rail services in the region are already served by modern vehicles purchased by the regional government.

 

In 2025, the Marshall’s Office subsidies for passenger transport will amount to PLN 237 million. This amount includes the costs of compensation for Arriva and Polregio as well as the costs of access to railway infrastructure and station fees – PLN 31.3 million.

 

Responding to passengers’ requests, the regional government adjusted train courses to make it easier for them to get to schools, universities and places of employment, and to return home. We are working with regional governments to enable passengers to travel to the Baltic Sea. Eight thousand passengers were carried by the Rybitwa train, which was a novelty in last year’s timetable and ran regularly between Toruń and Kołobrzeg on holiday weekends. In the new timetable, which is effective from 15 December 2024, the Barnim train co-financed by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Wielkopolskie and Zachodniopomorskie voivodship governments runs from Bydgoszcz Główny station to Szczecin Główny station. Barnim makes it easier for passengers to get to the capital of the Zachodniopomorskie voivodeship and to the west coast.
