Investments 2025: Beautiful and Functional Architecture for Our Book Collections
Soon, two of the most important libraries in the region—the Regional and Municipal Public Library in Bydgoszcz and the Copernicus Library in Toruń—will boast interiors that are a bibliophile’s dream. While the project in Bydgoszcz is just starting, the new wing in Toruń will welcome its first readers in the second half of this year.
Toruń: Abundant Natural Light and Display of Rare Volumes
The expansion and modernization of the Copernicus Library in Toruń are nearing completion, with construction expected to wrap up in May. The new wing of the main library complex on Słowackiego Street will feature full-wall glazing, ample natural light, bright colors, and cozy sofas where visitors can enjoy open access to the library’s collection. Additionally, a new exhibition area will allow visitors to view rare and valuable books previously stored deep in the archives. Director Danetta Ryszkowska-Mirowska anticipates opening the new wing in the second half of the year.
The cost of the expansion is 30 million PLN (with 14 million PLN allocated this year), funded by the national program European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, and Environment 2021-2027 (FEnIKS) and the regional budget.
Bydgoszcz: A Glass-Covered Courtyard and Appeal to New Audiences
The investment in the Regionsl and Municipal Public Library in Bydgoszcz is equally ambitious. Plans include conservation and adaptation of historic buildings, a glass roof over the courtyard, construction of a storage facility, and equipment purchases. New features will include a year-round space for cultural events, a children’s picture book workshop, and a gaming room.
Renovation, restoration, and construction will cover the neoclassical buildings at Długa Street (No. 39 and 41), Jana Kazimierza 2, and the Old Market Square (22 and 24), as well as the construction of a new connector for the building at Zaułek 11. Elevators and platforms will be installed to improve accessibility for wheelchair users.
The glass-covered courtyard, which will house the main reception area and lending library, will become a year-round venue for cultural events, including author meetings, regardless of weather conditions. Library management plans to create facilities for modern education and cultural promotion, aiming to attract new audiences.
Preparations for the investment are underway, including tender documentation to select a contractor. The project will commence this year and is expected to be completed by March 2027. The total cost is 42 million PLN (with 17 million PLN allocated this year), financed by European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region (FEdKP) 2021-2027, and grants from regional and Bydgoszcz municipal budgets.
